Happy Birthday to You!

Today is LM's first birthday! So far, she has enjoyed a breakfast of cheese squares and a bite of applesauce (and did not enjoy the sweet potato I put on her tray.) We then played a rousing game of "I throw the spoon on the floor and say, 'uh-ooooh' and you pick it up." We were able to snuggle (surprise, anyone?) in my bed for awhile and she fell asleep in my arms. That must have been her present to me, it was so sweet.

DM and Pop went to play golf at my parent's country club this morning and the lady mice were going to meet them for lunch. (Here it comes, first child syndrome- no matter what happens, even if by accident, it's always about the firstborn. Today was no different.) In the car, I was watching the clock, waiting to announce at 12:25 pm, "LM was born right now, a year ago!" Well, instead, I found myself wiping throw up off of BigM, who barfed in the car on our way to lunch, which was a good 40 mins from the house. So picture it, BigM standing on the side of the road in her underwear, me using the last of the baby wipes to get the vomit off her hands, her face and her hair while LM is sitting content in her carseat, quietly sucking on her pacifier. Then I remembered the LM hadn't pooped in two days. Yay. (And yes, she did poop at lunch. We had to make do with some papertowels. Poor LM.)

After a long, stinky ride home, we hung around the house for a bit and Pop and my SIL brought home a pizza and a chocolate (birthday) cake. We all ate as fast as we could so we wouldn't be late to see the legendary Gregg Russell at Harbortown. (And before you go thinking you're Harriet the Spy and you have figured out where I live- we are actually on vacation right now! So good try.) BigM, LM and I had a great time sitting on the stage for the concert. BigM was just about dying to get up and sing and LM was just about dying to crawl all over the stage. We had a blast. (I'm actually not sure what the rest of my family was doing, they did not sit with me- and the 3-8 years olds.) I especially enjoyed it since I used to come see Gregg Russell when I was a little mouse.

Now for your reading pleasure, I have pasted LM's birth story, which I wrote last year (before I was a blogging MM).

"We got to the hospital at 6 am for the induction and they got the IV started. My dr came in at 7; he broke my water and they started the pitocin drip at the same time. Contractions started to regulate and my husband and I watched the news- around 9, I asked for the epidural and in came the anesthesiologist. He did his thing and left- it only took fully on the left side, apparently LM was positioned such that she was blocking part of the nerves in my stomach so my left side was adequately numb and the right side was numb enough that the contractions were bearable. My nurse tried lying me on my right side to see if moving would help, but it didn't. Around 11, she checked me and I was already 5 cms dialated, so she said she would go ahead and take her break so when she got back she wouldn't miss anything. While she was gone, the medicine must have worn off, bc the contractions came back in FULL FORCE! on the right side (the left side was still numb enough that I didn't feel them) and I wasn't sure if I should push the button for more medicine or wait and ask if there was something else we should do. DM finally got sick of watching me in so much pain that he pushed the button and about that time, the nurse walked back in and I told her what was going on. She asked if I was feeling pressure, which I was, and she said she was going to check me because she thought I would be fully dialated. She had only been gone 45 minutes, so I thought she was crazy. Well, obviously she knew what she was doing because I was 10 cms. And because I was "so far along," she pushed the button for more medicine and we were off! LM wasn't fully engaged, so she had me push a few times laying flat on my back (and once they got her to move even a little bit further into the birth canal, the epi immediately balanced out and both sides were numb)- I could barely feel anything so I felt like I was not doing anything when I was pushing. The next thing I know, the dr had come in, another nurse was there to hold back my leg, my nurse was pushing on my belly and three little pushes later, there was LM! The entire pushing process took less than 30 mins, and we were waiting in between contractions for around 3 mins each time. Scarily enough, the cord was wrapped around her neck twice*, and she was completely blue when she came out but once they got her onto the table and started rubbing on her, she turned pink and started fussing. I did hear her make some little noises right when she was born, so I wasn't too worried, and she still hasn't let out a full blown cry even 36 hours later. (But before you get all annoyed that I have a quiet baby, please know my first came out screaming like a banshee and really hasn't stopped since- so life is fair!)"

(*Please don't tell my parents, they still do not know this and if they find out, she will be at Mayo for testing to make sure she is all right.)

Happy first birthday, Little Mouse! (And before you get all worried, we're having her party on the fourth of July, which was her actual due date! More birthday fun to come!)
