Bean there, done that

DM and I tried edamame for the first time about 2 years ago. It was also the last time we had it- not because we didn't like it, but because my mom had given us the bag and I haven't really been able to find it locally. (Okay, I haven't really looked too hard, that stuff is a lot of work for a little profit.)

But last week, I had a coupon for a Cascadian Farms frozen organic vegetable (and it was on sale, of course,) so I got a package. I have been pretty excited all week about fixing it, because I had high hopes it would be something that the whole family would eat and actually enjoy.

DM taught BigM how to pop the beans out of the shell, and soon her plate was covered with edamame shells. I, of course, had to supervise LM's beans as I was fairly certain she would not be able to open them and would try to eat the whole thing.

LM was so thrilled with them that she practically squealed more while frantically signing "more please"- and she wolfed them down faster than I could pop them onto her plate.

All of the sudden, BigM starts making gagging noises and says, "Dese are yucky, mama. I doen like dese."

Apparently, it wasn't the beans that she liked, it was the shelling (which was actually quite hilarious because every once in awhile she would pop one out with such force that the bean would hit her in the face, or fly across the room like the escargot in Pretty Woman- you know, "slippery little fellas".)

Hiding under her rice (another culinary flop in her book) was a pile of beans. DM, LM and I were so excited that we practically clawed each other's eyeballs out trying to get them and BigM agreed that next time she would be more than happy to shell all our beans for us. Now that's love.

And possible a violation of some kind of child labor law, I'm sure.

I've never even heard of those. We may have to try them. Can we borrow Big M to come do the shelling for us? :)
