Stop bugging me!

BigM: Bug Explorer

BigM received a "My First Backyard Explorer Kit" for Christmas. It's been sitting in my bathtub, unopened, for the last 3 weeks because I just could not fathom putting one more toy into our completely-overstuffed-busting-at-the-seams playroom right now. That hasn't stopped her from begging me every single day to open it.

Neither does me telling her it's not bug season and it's been in the low 20s outside for the past 2 weeks (aka too cold to go outside, or even get dressed out of warm pajamas. I know, that's totally unrelated but somehow seems like a good explanation for why you can usually find me in my pjs at 3 in the afternoon.) Finally, after three days in a row of her voluntarily cleaning up her playroom, I decided to reward her with opening the bug kit. You have never seen a more excited child (well, actually LM may have been more excited about the edamame) and she just about wet her pants as she ran to my bathroom to get it.

We had a very warm day yesterday (I was actually joking with my friend about how back in November were decided to stop our daily park date because it was getting in the 50s and it was waaaaay too cold to get the kids out and now that it's back *up* in the 50s we were practially falling over ourselves to get the kids outside because it was so warm out there) so DM agreed to take BigM outside to look for non-existant bugs. That lasted all of about 4 minutes because, obviously in the dead of winter, there were no bugs to be found.

So this morning, BigM and DM went on a bug hunt indoors. I am proud (or embarassed?) to report that they found plenty of bugs, fit for observation, on various window sills throughout the house. I am not sure if I am happy or mortified that they were able to find seven different types of bugs to fill up the plastic divided container.

I can't wait for the Spring for warmer weather, and of course, for my little Backyard Explorer to find some bugs of the outdoor variety.
